It's not very exciting, but I got up and did my morning stuff then immediately drove down to Best Buy to get the movie. I looked to see if there was a DVD/ Blu Ray bundle but alas, they didn't nor did they have a special edition. I also searched around for the soundtrack, but they didn't have that either.
When I got home, I popped the DVD in my laptop and watched the deleted scenes first, which I really enjoyed, then the movie. When the movie ended, I cried, literally. Now I didn't cry in the theater, because my parents were there. But when I watched it alone, I couldn't hold it back, it's such a powerful ending to me, and the music didn't help either. XD
I'm going to watch it again with commentary in a bit.

I don't think there IS a special edition. They only called my copy a special edition because it had a shiny slip cover, and they probably thought they could sell it for more if they called it "special". (Luckily, I got it discounted, and only paid 15 for it.)

special editions usually have 2 or 3 discs inside it and usually say "special edition" on the cover or something

*takes deep breath* OK, HERE WE GO. I am out of town up until 3 hours ago, so I end up waking up this morning in a hotel room in E-town. Fun fun. I suddenly remember from the day before seeing a poster in HMV that showed the release date for '9', and I get really, really excited. About an hour later, we pack up our stuff and head out the door. It is 8:00 AM. After a breakfast at Ricky's (best 3-cheese omelettes ever) we start driving around the South E-town Common, wondering what store to hit before we left town. My Mom, who knows just how long I've waited for this day (as I never got the chance to see '9' in theaters), suggests checking Best Buy. So we did, and it is open. It is now 9:05 AM. I hop out of the van and rush inside, hopes high and cash at the ready. I don't see it. Undeterred, I go up to the customer service guy and ask him where they are, and he points them out to me. I am overjoyed, as the cover art is beautiful, and I got a 3D DVD cover (which is shiny and oh so pretty) to boot. Very quickly I rush over to the till and pay for it, and it only costs me $20.00 because of the Boxing Week sale. Joy to the world! Very quickly I rush back out to the van with this big, stupid grin on my face, and there was much rejoicing. Here's the kicker. I glance at the time. It is 9:11 AM. Two minutes beforehand I was at the till. That means that I bought the DVD for '9' at 9:09 AM on December 29th, 2009. :'D

I got the same looking DVD as Koh, so I guess I have special edition as well?
Either way, mine was a pretty clam experience. I walk into the store, and notice the fabulous row of shiny 9 DVD's. Said DVD is bought, I walk out of the store to my car and fan girl as soon as sit down.
It's been on replay since I got back from work.

I know, but the clerk said it was special edition. XD I think it's safe to say there is no 'special edition' (meaning a 2-Disc DVD).

D'awwww, Boo! That kinda sucks but, oh well. At least we got our needy little hands on a pretty decent DVD. They could have just slapped together a movie and a few uninteresting segments like the Silent Hill DVD. It's been three years and I'm still disappointed with that...

I always will find amusement in that. And hey, it's like collectable almost! Years from now we will look back and say, "That is a really nice looking DVD slip cover! It sure does look nice and shiney." And then pop it in and think, "This is a very good movie! Why, I am so glad I spent money for that nice casing for this nice movie." Also I kind of like spending more on a DVD if it means I can support 9, so... Also, 9'S BUTT. IN 3D. And 9 didn't really make a lot of money so I think it's fair that there isn't 2 DVDs or anything. I'm happy with what I got.

Alright, let me tell my story. Hopefully it clarifies what the Special Edition is.
I skipped out of work this morning (well, not really, I don't have set hours) and went down to FYE (an hour drive) to get 9. When I arrived, they had their New Releases section, and a few spots for the 9 DVDs. There was a Blu-Ray one, and then another with a shiny, kinda-3D sleeve, listing some of the features like commentary and the original short (but omitted the fact that there are any deleted scenes, wtf?). Seeing no other options and unsure what version I was holding, I asked the clerk if there was a special edition version. He said there was, and that it came in a STEEL CASE, but that they didn't have any available and weren't getting any in the forseeable future.
So evidently, if a special edition exists, it's a steel case. The question is, of course, did anyone actually get one? As Koh's situation seemed to demonstrate, even FYE doesn't seem entirely sure what the Special Edition is, having sent a regular edition version. I bought the exact same thing at Target for $18.

...I have the same thing as Koh. And I am not by any means happy with FYE right now. I went in a week ago to put the special edition copy on reserve. So I pay to reserve it, leave my name and number, and the clerk says they will call me Monday. Monday comes, no phone call. I went to the mall that day so I asked a different clerk that was there at the moment when I could pick it up. She told me tomorrow. I get there today and guess what. They didn't have the copy of the reserve reciept they were supposed to keep. I had to give her my copy (thankfully I had it). She just went and grabbed one off the display shelf. -_- The slip cover is awesome, but as I was looking the DVD over on the way home it didn't seem so special edition to me. And if what FYE gave me turns out not to be the Special Edition they advertised and I paid to reserve I will raise hell with someone's sorry butt. Regardless of my unhappiness with FYE I greatly enjoyed watching the movie and everything else on the DVD the moment I got home. Deleted scenes and commentary FTW! ;D Here's the kicker. I glance at the time. It is 9:11 AM. Two minutes beforehand I was at the till. That means that I bought the DVD for '9' at 9:09 AM on December 29th, 2009. :'D That is awesome. XD I wanted to try to check mine out at that time, but I woke up too late. ^^;

Unless it specifically says Special Edition somewhere on the box, it's not. I got my copy at Target and it has the exact same slip. The associate at FYE where I went said the special edition comes in a steel case, though there was no way to confirm that since there weren't any there.

Everything went well for me. I got up early, drove out to Best Buy (I even had a gift card from Christmas!) I swooped in and grabbed the prettiest DVD possible from the shelf, and ran the register. There wasn't even a line. And then the cashier said, 'Wow, I've never heard of this movie before.'
Cue fangirly spewing. "Well it's based on a short film by Shane Acker and he's directing too Timburtonisreallyjustproducingandit'sfantasticandthevisualsareamazingtaeonehometodayyou'llloveit." And so on. I think I scared her.

Ok, so here's my story. Apparently to my current knowledge, I'm the ONLY person to get a Special Edition Copy. I went to the mall at 11 AM. I went into FYE and had my receipt that I used to reserve my 9 special edtion copy in hand. They told me they had one left in stock that they had saved for me. They were looking around the store for this copy for 10 minutes. Finally they figured out that the special edition was at another store, so they had to get someone from that store to send it over to where we were. I waited for 1-2 hours for the DVD. FINALLY, they got it in. Because they had caused such an inconvenience of not having it in when I had reserved it, they took 10 DOLLARS off the original price (instead of paying 25, I paid 15 dollars for my special edition ). I couldn't open it right away, had to leave for work. I got home after work, ready to open it. It's got a shiny slip cover, and the characters on the slip cover are 3D. I opened it, and to my shock... only one disc. Wait, what? Only one disc? Yes. And I checked the content on the disc, it's the EXACT same as the normal DVD. Either I was conned and they slipped a normal DVD into the shiny slip cover, or that's really what the special edition is: the only difference is the shiny 3D slip cover. XD I'm just happy that I got 10 dollars off of it. Tomorrow I'm buying a BluRay edition with my BestBuy giftcard LOL. Moral of the story, the special edition is not so special. XD; That... is weird. Your copy of the DVD looks exactly like mine. And... I'm pretty sure mine isn't special edition. Hm. But, in other news... HOLY INK ON A 6 I HAVE MY 9 DVD DFNSDGJKNSDKJNJ!!! OK, this story is not so spectacular, but it is kinda odd... I ordered my copy just yesterday from Amazon, with a two-day shipping which would make the shipping fee free - I was super excited to have it, but content to wait for two days. Next morning, I wake up, come downstairs, and my mom has this package. She says, "UPS just delivered this. Did you order overnight shipping?" And I'm all, "No, no, I got it two-day. Maybe it's just a late Christmas present..." But she shakes it a bit, and I can DEFINITELY hear a DVD rattling around in there... so of course I open it, and what do I find. A bloody gorgeous 9 DVD, that's what. I have a COMPLETE fangasm, giggling and hopping up and down like a lunatic, then rush off to my comp... I'm gunna take my time with this beauty. But yeah. I have no idea why two-days turned into overnight. Hm.

Oh my gosh the FYE at my mall totally failed me. My whole family went to the mall yesterday and guess what? FYE was going out of business.Of course So we went to Wal-Mart to get it X3
And it's funny, because like my step-dad mentioned, the whole reason we went to the mall was for me so I could get 9 Everyone ended up getting something there expect for me XD
