And honestly, I don't know why they bothered giving the twins a mouth. I guess it's good they can frown and all that, but otherwise pretty useless... XD

Technically none of them need mouths because their actual voices come from their chest, but it was another way the scientist tried to make them human, and it might have been a bit....unnerving to see two 'punks without mouths. I could be wrong since 9 didn't seem to react much to 5 only having one eye, but maybe the scientist intended for them to have voices but didn't have enough room once he fitted them with whatever device they use to store all their information.

I sort of like the idea that the twins have mouths for the sake of expression. There might also be a possibility that the Scientist probably wasn't thinking about deviating too much from your basic human face, as the stitchpunks are supposed to be something of the "next step" of humanity. Mouths are a huge part in facial expressions, and if you take that away then there's a significant limit on what kinds of emotions you can display; whereas if you took something like the nose away it wouldn't hamper that ability so much. And because the twins are mute they seem to rely even more on facial expressions [and body language as well but that's besides the point] to communicate than the rest of the cast. So maybe out of all nine of them, the twins especially needed mouths, even though there wasn't any speaking they'd be doing? Except for the time that 4 seemed to play an audio recording that went with the war projection she showed 9, 5, and 7. Not sure that counts, though. I don't know.
And speaking of mouthless-ness, I had to stop for a bit and count how many mouthless stitchpunk characters I have. And I have nine. Pfff.

Well, for animation purposes, they were limited with the eyes... So, they had to use the "eyebrows" and mouth to make up for it. I once read somewhere that they had tried to make the stitchpunks look like the actors that were playing them, but it looked strange, so they dropped it. XD

Not entirely, though - there's definitely a bit of Christopher Plummer about 1. XD

^ Exactly. And I think what they dropped visually, they continued with demeanor. There are many times when I see 9 make a face in the movie and I think "That is an Elijah face". They both have the same cuteness factor in my opinion. :3 Speaking of 9 being cute, I thought it was adorable how small he is compared to the floor boards in this shot.

I noticed here that it looks like 6 landed on top of 5's legs. So it makes me wonder how 5 was able to get up so fast to stop 1 after 1 took the match.

Perhaps he shoved him off? XD I'm kidding. Wiggled out quickly, maybe?

Yeah, wiggling out seems best... or 6 could have just rolled over to the right. lol

Alright, bear with me guys, I've had this theory for a little while. I've been trying to study the artistic elements in 9, you know, composition, rule of thirds, etc. And I found something very interesting about the lighting they use for certain scenes. In the big picture it's 9's movie, but not all the scenes are 9's. I noticed this first, that when 1 is the center of attention, he tends to be set to a stark contrasting orange lighting. 7, however, is the opposite. She is preferably shown with more subtle pastels or soft natural outdoorsy colors. When she's not, it means she's not in her element. In a group shot, the lighting is almost a subliminal suggestion on which character your attention should be focused on. I haven't found a decent stable pattern for the other characters yet, so maybe it's more towards their personality types than the characters themselves. Either way, I found it to be interesting and thought it worthy to share, and I'd love to hear everyone's thought on the matter. ^^

Oooh. You know, with all these tiny details, it occurs to me that you could probably write a pretty good media studies essay on this film, what with the lighting and the characterisation...

That's a great theory, Mel I've seen them do things like that in live action movies, as well. They put a lot of attention to detail in this movie, so you're probably not far off.

That's pretty neat! Ever since I started my Digital Animation course I've been taking apart the movie bit by bit - it's very interesting~! There's a lot more to this movie than you see at an initial glance.
So, while not as interesting or educational as Mel's point, I watched the movie again and jotted down names and who said what, and I found some things:
- 5, obviously, said names most often, a total of twelve times. The name he said the most was 2's (seven times), followed by 9 (three), then 6 and 7 (once each).
- 9 says the most names (1, 2, 5, 6, and 7) a total of nine times.
- 2's name was said most often (twelve times).
- 9's name was said mostly by 7 (four times). His name comes up a total of eight times.
- 2, 3, 4 and 6 never say any names.
- 3 and 4 are the only ones whose names aren't said.
- 8's name is mentioned twice, both times by 1 ("8? Where's 8?")
- And finally, despite saying the most names, 5's name is only said twice, by 9.
If any of it's confusing, I blame the fact that the characters' names are numbers. XD

^ Actually there is a scene where 2 says 5's name if you listen closely. On the scene where 5 has his hand on 2's back and 9 goes up to the Tailisman to pick it up, listen really closely and you'll hear 5 say something that sounds like "I can't we believe we actually did it" and then 2 says "Oh come on 5, I never thought..."
Though I'll admit that I didn't notice it until someon on DA pointed it out. So I watched the scene again, listened closely and found they were right.
Also another thing I didn't notice on my first few viewings was that after 2 threw the rock at the Cat Beast he says "Here kitty kitty" before he says the "Why don't you finish what you started with me?" line.

^ He says "here kitty kitty"? It always sounds like "hey, hey, hey..." to me. But then again, my iPod doesn't have the greatest sound quality XD
But anyway, that's very interesting, Mel! I never would have taken note of the lighting/composition like that.
