Okay, so... ever since my computer went down, I've pretty much been left to my own devices in terms of finding amusing things to do. After much deliberation, I decided that it would be fun to pop in my 9 Blu-ray specifically to watch the bonus features--but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if I would find anything... interesting by closely observing the workspaces of the film's creators.
And ooooooh boy, did I ever. 83
Now, unfortunately I was only able to snap these pictures with my iPhone camera rather than cap them directly from the screen... so they aren't the clearest images available, but they do their job well enough.
Let's start with...
According to this outline, 9 was originally supposed to meet 6 immediately after the war flashback. This is interesting because, judging by the picture they used, the scene had already made it into production before it was cut... perhaps a rough animatic, or even beyond that. It would have been interesting to see how the order of the film would have changed if 9 had met 6 right from the start.
Original concept art for the watchtower scene. This is probably most interesting to me because I'm using the building featured here as an important location in Infinite 9, but regardless of that, it's still quite intriguing. We never see this structure physically in the film--the most we see of it is a photo from a newspaper clipping in the twins' archive. However, this isn't the only time we've seen it in concept materials for the film... so clearly it had been designed for some higher purpose which never made it into the final product.
9 confessing his love for 7!? I get the strangest feeling that this was done as a joke (I mean, come on... it's a thought bubble on a sticky note XD), but still... this confirms that even the film's own creators shipped them. 83
When I first glimpsed this shot from the editing room portion of the Blu-ray exclusive "On Tour with Shane Acker," I just assumed it was an unrendered version of the scene where the group faces the Cat Beast in the factory--the animation was so clean and polished that all it needed was to be lit and textured. But upon closer inspection, I realized that it is in fact NOT from any scene featured in the film. It made no sense to me, until I saw this...
Another deleted scene we weren't shown (with a human skeleton, holy--)! But how does it relate to the above Cat Beast animation, you ask? Quite simple, actually: the Cat Beast footage bears the number 075 in three different sections of the frame, and the cover for "Trench" is labelled SEQ. 075. Now, if you know anything about the editing process, these are sequence numbers. They help the editors and story developers keep track of which shots go to which scenes, and which scenes go where in the film's ultimate timeline.
Basically what this means is that there was going to be an entire scene between 9 and 5 entering the trenches and their arrival at the factory--another scene which would eventually wind up cut. In it, our heroes would have a brief run-in with the Cat Beast inside the darkness of the trenches... probably a close call more than a struggle. I can't say as to why the Cat Beast would have been down there in the first place, but whatever the reason, the scene was far enough into production (judging by the quality of the animation alone) that it very well could have made the cut if it weren't for some last-minute changes. A shame, really... just the idea of it screams suspense.
And while we're still on the subject of deleted scenes, do these in-progress shots look at all familiar to anyone? 83 Well, if you own the DVD or Blu-ray, they should--they're rough animations of "The Fallout" deleted scene, one of the few actually featured (in storyboard format) in the bonus features! Considering this scene had some great 6 moments, I'm sure a lot of people would have loved to see this in the movie.
And that's all I have to offer for now. Hopefully this isn't too off-topic, considering this thread is mainly for things we caught in the film itself... but it still feels relevant to me, so here's hoping. XD
