I see this discussed a lot, so I figured I would make a thread Basically, post any thoughts you have on the numbers of the characters. Aside from the numbers being their birth order, what do you think the significance of their number is? Do you think Shane had any hidden meanings or symbolism behind the numbers he gave to each character? For example: 1 is not just 1 because he was born first, he's 1 because he regards himself as "higher up" on the food chain than his companions. He is the king, and they are his subjects. Also, I think it's a pretty big coincidence that 7 watches after the twins more than any of the other characters, and 3+4 just happens to equal 7. 7 is also widely considered a "lucky" number. Feel free to add your thoughts!

I read that the number 9 is considered unlucky by the Japanese and lucky by the Chinese, which would make sense 'cause 9 is the final hope, the savior of the stitchpunks and yet accidently woke the Fabrication Machine and inadvertently caused five deaths of the group.

I can see the 'lucky 7' argument, especially considering the events she went through before and during the movie. She's lucky to be alive.
Pretty much EVERYTHING about 1's number denotes his personality XD His alpha male, big-boss-man numero uno attitude, the whole first-born (made?) entitlement thing he has going on. Shane probably developed his personality purely from his number & what it signifies. Heck, he even LOOKS like the number 1, being tall & with a bolt upright figure.
The number 6 also has significance in the supernatural ... perhaps why 6 has his abilities?
And this probably wasn't intentional, buuuuut the Dewey Decimal classes for 300 & 400 are 'Social Sciences' and 'Language'. That amused me.

If you trancelate "8" in French, you'll get "huit", which is almost prunounced as "weed"

OK. This goes a bit beyond simple number analysis, but here's the thing: like JJ said, 6 is traditionally related to the supernatural, but 666 is also related to the Devil and evil. As anyone who's ever spent a lengthy amount of time here knows, 1 is typically associated with the Pope, and many agree that 1 dislikes and disbelieves in 6 (at best).
COINCIDENCE? I THINK YES.
...Wait.

I think Shane mentioned that 9 is one less than the universally-accepted "perfect number" of 10. So, 9 represents the human soul because it may get close sometimes, but it'll never be perfect.
Also, since 7 is also considered a "perfect number" in Chrisitanity, does anyone think that her being mostly white-colored (and therfore pure and perfect) is a coincidence?
And also also ( ^^; ), I think 2's number has significance as well. Even though 2 is repsected as an elder of the group, he'll always be number 2 to 1 because he doesn't seem to be the type of person who would wanna subvert 1 and become the leader. He's happy just being number 2 ^^
Also also also... 5 is the middle number between 1 and 9. He not only holds the group together just by being the middle number, but he also puts them back together, as evidenced by his sewing up of 9 and 7. ^^

I have several thoughts on some of the characters numbers.
3 and 4 - These two numbers are often used in a lot of media to represent twins. One example of this is the anime Rozen Maiden; the twin dolls, Suiseiseiki and Souseiseki, are the third and fourth Rozen dolls made, respectively.
7 - Nana is the Japanese version of the number 7, an is almost always used on female characters in Japanese media. 7 is the only obvious girl, sooo . . .
. . . and that's all I have so far. =__=

The number eight is considered to be a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian cultures, I believe.
In Discordianism (spelling?), 5 is also really important. Discordianism is the idea that chaos is all that there is, and that disorder and order are both illusions imposed onto chaos. They have the Law of Fives, and other 5 related things. I just find that ironic, since 5 is one of the more peaceful characters. XD

I have another sort of "sixth-sense" relating thing with 6 - I was looking at this book I have about the 7 Chakras (yay Avatar: the Last Airbender!), and one of them, called the "Third Eye Chakra", deals with psychic visions and stuff. That happens to be the 6th Chakra!

Heh Another thought on 8... Here is the number 8: And here is 8 himself: 8's general body shape kinda reminds me of the number 8; little head on top of a bigger lower half ^^; Also, here is a picture of some scissors (yes I know, they got all warped ) : As you all know, 8 uses a scissors' blade as a weapon. What shape do the handles make next to each other? ^^ Coincidence? I think not!

Wow, I gotta say when they design the characters, they actually make them look like their numbers. Like 7 standing side-ways with her skull-met down. But yes, that is a very interesting fact, my friend.
