Perhaps it's because he awoke with the talisman? Then again, 9 is already a bit wiser then the rest of them. He's a thinker, while 1 has taught all the others to be afraid. This is what separates him from the rest of the stitch-punks.

ah, this is true another question about 9; i wonder how he and 5 became so close in the flim, i mean in the short he and 5 were the ONLY ones left so u kinda understand why their so close, and why 5 is looking after 9 like a mentor/father.
but in the flim 9 is STILL the newbie of the group, but i just wonder how his first reaction to 5 and the others were.

Hmmmm... maybe 5 admires 9 for his rebellious nature and his high intellegence? And maybe 9 admires 5 for sticking up to him when 1 was against both of their views? OR - it seems like both of them were very close to 2... So maybe they bonded from their shared freindship with 2? I'm sure there are deeper reasons, though.

I doubt there are deeper reasons...
Also,I think 9 hangs around quite some time with the group,at least few weeks in the Cathedral before the final part of their journey begins.
Bounds of friendship to the point that 5 is getting beaten by 8 within the struggle for leadership of 1 and 9 take some time to form.

Durr 5 lieks 9 bcub he teech him smertz. -_-" I'd always thought that 5 was just naturally a nice guy and wanted to help out the noob. 9's burlap like 2 so 5 would feel a a sort of connection with him, and then when he realizes 9 is the right one to lead and protect the future 5 becomes his loyal friend. 1 has 8, 9 has 5.

Shane Acker does make an important point regarding human nature. You see, the short film revolved around the themes of not only mind over strength but also an exploration of human nature. So in the feature film, 9,the youngest one, is supposed to be the one who is not burdened by the fears and limitations of the older 8. This reflects the idea that a child is supposed to be the one with the most potential. So, this means that he is the one who can learn the most at the same time is boudn to make mistakes. After all, 9 is the closest to perfection humans can ever achieve. OMG!!!! That is the most phenomenal post ever!!! It amazes me to no end. Great work. that is just wonderful. I love your reasoning. Wow...that is all that can be said. wow.

Yep, Elijah Wood just loves playing little people. ;D But in all seriousness, when I heard his conversation with 1 in the Winged Beast clip, I think I realized just how perfect Elijah Wood's voice is for 9. My reaction to 9's retort of "And you are a blind man... guided by fear." Was a little less intelligent than I would have liked it to be. While it's really cool the way the script says things that you don't normally hear in movies, and the actors carry it out excellently, I can do nothing but SQUEEEE!!! when I hear stuff like that. I loved that moment, shows that 9 won't just stand back and let things go their own way.

Maybe 5 thinks that, because 2 approved of 9, he would approve as well, and maybe their friendship grew from there. 9 seems like the type of guy that would like everyone at first, and then as he learned more about them his opinion would change or grow.
9's innocent, I think we can tell that from the first thing we heard him say to 2: "Are we alone?" His face, right there, just feels innocent to me, like there is just no full understanding. He's afraid that they're the only ones, and he doesn't want that, he wants others around him.
... That probably made no sense, but I am still dizzy from my ER trip so I'm doing my best to make sense. XD

When 8 was about to teach 9 a lesson after dropping 5, 9 looked as though he was about to defend himself with the lightstaff. Wow, talk about nerve...9 is not one to cross
