I think the animators are extremely inconsistent. XD I made a post a while back in 7's thread, here, showing how she looks to be mostly left-handed, except when she isn't. XD I'd also noticed that 5 seems to be the opposite -- right-handed, except for when he isn't. The way he wears his gear on his back would suggest he's a lefty, but the only time he ever draws left-handed is during the factory chase (right before 7 takes over) and all the other times he shoots, he does so right-handed. He even draws the match from his quiver right-handed (across the body, which I don't believe you're supposed to do), during the "full barrel" scene. He also sews with his right, and carries the blade and lightstaff in his right. However, now you've made me curious about the others, so I just went and looked: - 1 carries his staff in either hand, but uses it right-handed on both 5 and 9 at the beginning, and also crosses out 2's name right-handed. - 2 strikes the match and fixes 9's voice box right-handed. - Can't tell much from the twins. Big surprise. XD - 6 is only shown drawing twice, both with his right, but he has ink on both hands, so who knows? - 8 throws his scissor blade with his right hand, but seems to carry his sword around with his left when he isn't using it two-handed. - 9 seems to be the most consistently right-handed; he draws in the dirt, presses the buttons on the Talisman, cuts 1 free, and wields his lightstaff right-handed (there might be exceptions to that last, but I'm not sure). Oh, yeah. I can beat any topic to death. XD Anyway, I'd agree that most of the characters are shown on screen as being ambidextrous to some degree, whether the animators intended it or not.

Technically speaking anyone can be ambidextrous. With 50 years, I have no doubt they had the time to teach themselves how to use their non-dominant hand. (Or the animators could just be screwy XD)
I am right handed but I often grab things on the left side of my desk with my left hand. I also hold books in my left hand, throw things with it, anything that is not considered necessary (holding a fork to eat, writing, the like).
9 seems to be right handed to me, and the only one completely right dominated.

I'm pretty sure 7 is left handed. During the movie she held her spear in her left hand. I'm not sure about anyone else.

I'm glad someone brought this up, because I've been wondering if that's the case with 5.
-When he sees 2 in the birdcage he uses his left hand to nudge 2's shoulder -He opens himself with his right hand, takes out the calculator battery with his left hand and gives it to 9 with the same hand. -He goes to 2's left side to support him with his left hand. -Holds up his left hand to shield himself -Holds his crossbow to his left side. -Touches his eyepatch with his left hand -Picks up 2's hat with both hands, but caresses it with his left. Same thing with the scalpel blade. -Reaches for the map with both hands at different times.
But as red says, he also sews 7 up with his right, takes the match out with his right, and shoots his crossbow with his right. He also uses his right hand to guide the telescope.
Basically, I think that 5 is naturally left handed, but any useful action he does with his right hand because he learned from 2.(which could indicate that 2 made 5's crossbow)
So I think I'll have to agree with Bane on this one. Though I imagine that 6 and the twins were inherently ambidextrous, the rest of them taught themselves to use both hands. Since they're robots, I don't think there's any physical difficulty in using both hands equally, so it's easy to learn. They just have to go against the instinct part that comes with the soul fragment. It seems like everyone is ambidextrous except for 1 and 9; 9 didn't have the time to teach himself, and 1 never needed to teach himself because, well, he just sat on his butt all day. XD
Here's how I see it:
1- Right handed 2- Ambidextrous(Naturally right handed) Twins- Naturally ambidextrous 5- Ambidextrous(Naturally left handed) 6- Naturally ambidextrous 7- Ambidextrous (Naturally right handed) 8- Ambidextrous (Naturally left handed) 9- Right handed (but beginning to learn to use both)
For 7, she held her spear with her left hand, yes, but that was so she could use her right to support her weight when she jumped off of the Cat Beast's back. For 8, he holds his knife with his right, but he used his left to shove 9 into the bucket elevator and pat 1 on the back.

Maybe the animators didn't really bother being consistent. I bet they didn't think the fans would look so deeply into things. XD

When animators create an action, they usually use the mirror, or take footage of one of their coworkers for reference material. So, I'm sure there was a few lefties in the studio to throw everyone off from being totally right handed. XD

This is really interesting! I think it's pretty likely that it was just a series of animation mistakes, but ha, so fun to think about. I personally subscribe to Mel's theory; it makes a good deal of sense to me. The next time I watch 9, though, you can bet I'll be paying attention to this! XD
