Alright, so Rattles and Shrineart inspired me to work on a new project, and I was working on the main stitchpunk.
A new creation method I was using was limiting myself to things that I could get in my own home, and nothing else, then I reached a problem.
The optics.
So with some talking, a question arose: Do optics really need to be present for a stitchpunk to see?
Many say yes, but here is my counter argument: With all the things that alchemy can do in the 9 universe, I can see that the stitchpunk would be able to see just by having SOMETHING to represent eyes, like buttons.
So what do you guys think?
EDIT: Optic debate resolved, now the topic more focused on designing stitchpunks realistically, as in only designing them with materials that you would have readily available at the end of the world in your home or close vicinity.

Well.....they are essentially mechanical beings so they would need optics unless they have extrasensory abilities to see. I don't think it would be impossible for a stitchie to navigate by using psychic abilities or even using the electric current in their bodies to create an electromagnetic field to sense things similar to an electric eel or shark. Of course, if this were the case, then they would need nothing to represent eyes in the first place unless the buttons or whatever you prefer would be simple decoration.

If they could see through things like having buttons for eyes, it would be like Coraline! *shot*
That is an interesting question though. I like the idea of stitchpunks being able to have a kind of electric-current-field in order to see, if they had the ability to tap into that, they may not need optics at all.

interesting...hm...it's just that I really don't know where I would get optics in real life, so, I guess I'll have to cheat and just give him optics anyway

you could make optics out of clay.

Well, in Rag N Bone we have Vich who has a visor that sees through thermal imaging. And Hush that does not have optics and feels through vibrations.
Now, it all depends on the spin you want to put on alchemy. In Rag N Bone the character is limited by their body. Now the concept your using is plausible since alchemy isn't an exact science. Sort of like living voodoo dolls. We prefer a more scientific approach to the way our guys work. But if you use a more spiritual approach the buttons thing would work fine.
If you want to give him optics and you're handmaking him. Thimbles. Thimbles are like a buck or so at wal-mart and look great when filled in with a little clay.

From what I gathered in the movie, the souls are what make the characters human. It's what makes them alive, and have thoughts/personality/etc. I don't think it could be used to make them SEE anything. The characters have electric wiring in their eyes, and all that (the Scientist making 9's eye blink with the wires is one of the first images in the movie), so they probably do need something to look out of. Plus 5 can't see out of his eyepatch, now can he? XD

^Well, it never is said if 5 is blind in the eyepatch, but yes it makes sense.
And Shrine, actually I'm not MAKING him, It's a story that I'm making very realistic (that you guys inspired by talking about your hometown and stuff) and so I'm designing the character with things in my home, but not actually making it, although I make it in the story.

^5 says in the movie that he likes having one eye, because it helps him concentrate on one thing at a time. So, I think it's safe to say he's not seeing with both.

alright anna, I'll give you that one. Think, the scientist would have needed 18 camera's to get all those camera shutters

Ahhh, I see. Well, if you need a sight option and you want to rely on a more 'spiritual' alchemy then the button thing works. Now if you want a practical substitute from your room or house you could use a webcam, camera, cell phone camera, microscope lenses, any sort of viewing device that you may have in your home would work.

Some ideas that may help as well would be to look up how the human eye sees and the therapies being used to regain sight.

yeah, I could do that, because this is what I've "made" him from so far: Fabric is from my bed comforter: His palms and feet were cut up from my wood floor, his head fabric and any other fabrics that aren't the comforter would be from my mom's art store, along with the frame and fingers from the puppets in said store. Then, after I have the super super undeveloped basic of him, I'm going to RP him immediately starting right after his creation, so kinda like 9's first expirence. And I have all these litte quirks that will change his appearance, including a list of items that if he finds it in an RP, he will sew it to himself and eventually build his own appearance.

Very nice. That fabric is REALLY awesome. And we've actually done the RP from first awakening thing. That was done with the collegepunks and they actually changed drastically based on that. It works out nicely.

Well I guess I should change the name of the thread as the optic thing is way past I guess.
Anyway, I think I got a list here of stuff that he'd look at:
Assorted buttons Coins & Poker chips Bottle caps (figured out how to make a weapon out of that) cards tops Bullet on a string.
Then I figured out how to make a stitchpunk chainsaw that works, but this guy isn't smart enough to make it, so I'll just keep that for someone who wants it.
