I basically live off of this stuff, that's how much I love it. And how much I was going to die in this forum. (Did that make any sense?)
I'm thinking they were trying to escape the war, yes, but they didn't consider it safe to get out of the car until it was too late.
Now, let me just rip something off of a non-existant fanfic here, why not.
"Mommy?" Her anxious words were faint and nearly inaudible, despite her effort to speak. "Are we.. going to die?"
The mother hesitated for a moment. But she knew it could, would happen, at any time, any moment, and soon. She'd have to tell her what was going to be the truth.
"Yes, yes, sweetie." A violent cough came after this, intervening with the rest of her dialogue, as if to prove her point.
"But at least... we'll die..."
She was not able to finish her sentence, but let one last thought run through her head.
...Together.
Well, how'd you like it? Eh? Ehh?
I'm with Azvol on this one, factory tour. Might also be an alright-source of human bones and various scrap people left behind.
I'm also with Azvol on this one. So a lynx walks into a factory...
Ouch.
I'm thinking that they A) might have gone scouting for things to kill until their power sources died out, like you said. The Cat Beast might have a more advanced source and might still be running on the last bit, given, it's not rechargable somehow (likelier descision, considering the technology they had, and that the events of 9 took place 50 years since all the dolls were completed.) Perhaps the Fabrication Machine
Or, B), they might have killed eachother, with earlier machines having an AI equivalent to a golem (they're stupid) with one order: to kill. Set one off accidentally, and it turns into an all-out feud, kind of like a cross between zombies and several packs of closely placed dynomite in a row.
I'm thinking the Machine thought this was a good defense mechanism but it turned out to be a mostly stupid mistake.
The Cat Beast probably just happened to be staying away from the other machines while scouting for things to kill, and later set up his own lair-trap-thing as a demonstration of how smart (but still evil) he was. Then he started scouting again, found 2, brought him to his lair, 2 got saved, and the Cat Beast was killed, followed by 2 himself.
Cue following movie events.
I don't know, and I don't know. He may have been killed by (technically) his own machine(s), which is pretty ironic. It was however planned that the Scientist killed the Chancellor (can't find the concept art in which this is depicted, will edit when found), but it doesn't make very much sense--he died after he brought 9 to life. And for him to die beforehand, 9 wouldn't have woken up, ever, but on the upside, all of our other favorite characters would still be alive.
Like, how did the mom and baby end up in the car and died like that?

The sky was shrouded with a dull haze, fog hanging thick over the ground. An eerie wind whipped through the gaping cracks of a broken car window, housing two of who seemed the last two people on earth: A mother, and her daughter, no more than some 10 years of age. Both were pale and shivering both from cold and fear, managing a gasp and fighting for breath."Mommy?" Her anxious words were faint and nearly inaudible, despite her effort to speak. "Are we.. going to die?"

How a doll head came to be inside the Factory?

What sort of cat head the Catbeast's skull is from, cuz I think it's too big for a housecat skull.

What happened to the remaining machines once the Fabmac was shut down? Did they all shut down, did they fight amongst themselves for control? Did they just wander around till they ran out of power?

How the Chancellor was killed, and if the dead soldier/guy in the movie WAS the Chancellor?
