Well I believe they cry, from really thin horizontal slits inbetween the glass and the rims of the optics. And their "tears" would be oil, but it would be a different consistency from their oil "blood". Eg, their tears would be much more runny and watery than the oil they bleed.

Personally, I don't think stitchpunks can shed tears. I'm just not sure how it'd physically work or be practical for a mechanical being. There are ways they can in both RP groups I'm in, but neither generates actual tears that fall from their optics (in one their optics "mist up", in the other sparks go of in their optics to simulate their eyes being full of tears).
I prefer just having my characters wail and make sounds like they're crying without the actual tears. It's just as powerful an image.

Well, in the movie 4 does "cry" when she is shown 7's staff, and realizes 7 was taken away. But her face is covered, so you can't really see if there's tears or anything.
But they do feel sad, and they do have a physical reaction that looks like crying. I just don't know if there's actual water/oil that leaks out of the optics. XD

It terms of stitchpunks crying, I had more of an idea of their souls cooling down when upset and causing condensation to form on their optics. (It.. "might" be possible? )

I think they can cry but not the way humans do. Maybe they kind of "dim" their optics, if they're the kinds with lights built into their eyes, or somehow haze them over a little to indicate they're crying. If not physically, as in real tears, they can sound like they're crying.

I've always gone with the no tears just body language and emotional sounds dealio. We actually had a reference to this in the Rag N Bone role play. Five broke down and Rattles (her character in the role play) was trying to explain it to me as, "He just sort of broke down crying I guess?" Cause he was sobbing with no tears. I've never liked the concept of oil with punks as blood or as tears or as a foodsource/alcohol. One of my guys, Dickens, she uses clear machine oil on her hands similar to how we would use lotion, to keep her hands moving smoothly. There have been jokes between myself and Rattles about fabric softener being used as lotion for body massages on stitchpunks but we never used it because it was such a derpy joke.

If we want to get super technical, crying requires a tear duct. It carries tears from the lacrimal sac. XD So, I highly doubt the punks' have that. Unless it's a mechanical version of it. But with the end of the world coming, I doubt the scientist thought it would be a good use of time to give them the ability to shed oil tears. Having the emotion of sadness is good enough, I suppose.

I prefer to have my characters go through the motions of crying, like the motions you make and the sobbing sounds with no tears. Its just how I've always seen it. Sometimes I've even called rain 'the tears he/she couldn't shed' and things along those lines.

I actually once read this comic over on DA where at the end, the souls of the Stitchpunks who died were crying after being released from the talisman. The tears ended up producing the rain that falls. I find this concept pretty interesting.
As for how it might work, I guess that since they're a product of the human soul that has been freed from their bodies they're "freed" in a sense from certain limitations they once had when they were alive. Any thoughts on this?

I see them crying tearless cries. Like in Toy Story 3, when Barbie's upset over being thrown out. She's obviously crying, but has no tears coming out.
