How do you think they can cry? I know that 5 sobs a little after 9 awakened the Fab machine, where he says "I knew we shouldn't have come!" the subtitles said he was sobbing. But I didn't see any tears or anything.
also, at the very end when it's raining, 7 looked like she wiped something from under her optic, like she was brushing away a tear or something. it could have been a raindrop, but I don't remember seeing a raindrop land on her optic. so I don't know what she was doing.
so how do you think they cry? do they cry, but don't produce tears?

I think they give the action of crying but don't produce any kind of tears. I don't see the stitchpunks have any tear-ducts or some sort.

Yes, they cry without tears. You're also forgetting the scene after 7 was taken by the Seamstress, when the twins are looking at the spear she left behind and 4 starts sobbing. There are no tears or sounds, but it's obvious what she's doing by her body language.

Technically, I don't think Stitchpunks can't actually cry. Sobbing can just mean the noises someone makes while they're crying, but that doesn't really mean they have the ability to shed tears. It's really just their body language that shows their emotion (such as for this case right here).

Prophet believes that although they can't shed tears, they can still cry. They're able to make the sounds of crying and sobbing, while they don't nesscerily(Curse my bad spelling!) have to produse tears.

Perhaps their optics can fog up, but I don't think tears would form. If you want to stretch fandom physics, maybe they could cry oil. XD

I personally think oil would be more like blood for them, but that's just me.
I think their optics fogging up is a good idea though.

I say she was wiping away a rain drop. I've always believed that, and I'm not about to stop doing so.

I think they give the action of crying but don't produce any kind of tears. I don't see the stitchpunks have any tear-ducts or some sort. I wholeheartedly agree with this. Basically the same with a lot of other 9-related theories for me, because I'm not as crazy (not necessarily the bad kind) as some other fans. See, having a soul, these homunculi/stitchpunks/whatever-you-want-to-call-them can feel emotion. Having only a fraction of a soul each, however, some emotions might come across more difficult than others, along with some other details, forming a distinct personality. But whatever the matter, they can love. They can feel sympathy and empathy; they're not exactly robots (though opinions on this vary slightly). And, due to their humanoid form, they can express their feelings through a means we can understand, such as through gestures or speech. However, there are limits to what they can do, and crying goes a bit beyond the limit for me. If they could cry (which would probably ruin their optics from the inside-out), it would probably gather behind the glass lens that shields their eyes from outside forces. And oil? A "downside" is an understatement. These guys would probably want to avoid crying at all costs, because if they did it once, they would go blind. Or at least have their vision partly distorted, much like us when our eyes tear up, but as the area is enclosed it wouldn't evaporate so quickly, and with oil, it'd probably be stained, and leave an ugly watermark. Maybe they could stab their eyes (wait no) or be taken to the infirmary to have the lens removed for cleaning? The closest a stitchpunk can get to crying is mimicking it, but I think just mimicking it is enough.

@ Tammy: As for what 7 was doing at the end of the movie . . . well, it's amusing - it's like a glimpse into 7's more feminine side. I always thought she was wiping away a tear too, but a friend said it looked like she was brushing away a strand of hair. And indeed, they had footage of the actors to incorporate their physical personality into each stitchpunk; I read somewhere that Jennifer was often tucking her hair behind her ear.
So, that's what I believe 7 was doing: tucking 'hair' behind her 'ear'.

Zoromon42 always picture water condensing under their optics and start to drip so it is like they are crying. But realistically he thinks that they just wouldn't shed tears.

I think that's Stitchpunk may cry, but not in the sense that we understand 'organic'. I, too, when 7 did the act of dry eyes I thought she was wiping a tear. 4 Also, when 7 was taken away, crying.
So I say with certainty that they possess, as a sort of legacy of the soul (like humans for DNA) a series of instinctive actions to express some complex emotions.

I'd have to agree that they can cry without tears. Because they're machines, And the only "real" way they could have tears would be like oil droplets or something. So while they wouldn't be able to produce tears, they would be able to make the emotion and all of that. So them having tears is literally a Fan-Fiction thing only *I'm guilty of that *
