Alright, we all know that there's quite a bit of symbolism in 9 I'd like to create a topic here for the discussion of those things and theories on them. To begin: When 8 swats 9 away from him and the Chess piece falls down through the Cathedral, I noticed it's the King piece. Could that symbolize 1's impending fall from power? Of course, we know that the Chancellor symbolizes Hitler and the flag symbolize the Swastika Also, one of those flags was used as the covering for the watchtower on top of the Cathedral Could that be possible symbolism for the fear of the machines constantly hanging over their heads? And the best one that I can think of may or may not have been intentional. The Scientist created the Fabmac for the good of mankind, but instead, it was abused and wiped out humanity The voice actor for the Scientist, Alan Oppenheimer, is related to Robert Oppenheimer, one of the creators of atomic energy and thus the atomic bomb. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Oppenheimeren.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_OppenheimerSurely, Robert Oppenheimer didn't intend for that technology to cause as many deaths and as much terror as it has. Was it intentional that Alan Oppenheimer was cast as a character with a similar mindset? I believe it is. Anyone else got symbolism ideas? ^^

I've noticed the first one, and I was gonna post it here but kept forgetting. XD Also, I'd hate to shoot down your second theory, but I don't think the fabric covering the watchtower is one of the the red/black flags. ^^; If it is, though, that's another epic example of symbolism. I had a few more myself, I just can't remember any at the moment . . . the movie's full of symbolism, though, such as 7's skullmet, the Cathderal itself, the twins' globe - even the light and dark before and after 1's flashback/history lesson.

I do remember Shadow telling me that the Scientist's voice actor was related to Robert Oppenheimer. I didn't believe her at first, until she dragged me into the computer room and showed me.

There is way too much symbolism in this movie, which is what makes it so AWESOME!
Anyway, here's what I got:
Zoro-san (Zoromon42) told me that during the funeral scene with 2, 9 placed 1's coin on his eyes is a Greek tradition to put coins on the dead's eyes to pay to go to heaven and to pay the boatman who's delivering the dead to heaven.
The symbols on the Tailsman, (I can't remember the names of the symbols) mean "Body", "Mind", and "Spirit" according to research. Those are the essentials to a human creature and are a connection to God's Three Persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). To me, it's kind of a nod to Pokemon. The fourth generation "Little Legendaries" (my way of calling them), Uxie, Mespirit, and Azelf, have a semi-relationship with the symbols. If you think about it, Uxie: The Being of Knowledge=Mind; Azelf: The Being of Willpower=Body; and Mespirit: The Being of Emotion=Spirit.
And then there's the creation of the rag dolls. The Scientist hung them on a contraption with the Tailsman swallowing his soul into them. If you looked at 9 while he was being born, you could see that he was being hung by the wrists, dangling, and head lagging. It's just like Jesus when he was being crusified on the cross. Religous imagery ftw! *smacked*
...Hee hee...I'm smart! ;D

A few things off the top of my head: 9 being the highest number... humanity can never be a perfect 10. 6's stripes are like prisoner clothes, as someone else pointed out. The end of the movie, 9, 7, and the twins are the only ones still alive. It reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve, from the bible. The sunrise at the end of the movie, symbolizing a new day, and a new beginning with the coming of the rain. The church burning down was also symbolizing the end of their safety. No more hiding. I'll think of more later. XD

I thought it was intriguing which numbers were the ones that survied to the end of the movie. Seriously, pick the numbers that have the most signifigance and meaning and they are 3,4,7 and 9!

It reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve, from the bible. OMG YES I HAVE ONE! Ok, think of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. 9=Eve (both have "curiosity") Talisman=Forbidden Fruit That's what I think, and so in my FF, when they rebuild civilization they call it "New Eden" (so there streetspirit, that's why)

^Actually, I've never seen anyone call the talisman the "forbidden fruit". That's a very interesting idea...

yeah, the forbidden fruit from the creation story in genesis. Since when Eve takes the forbidden fruit, she dooms all future humanity (except for Mary) to suffer original sin.
When 9 takes the talisman, it causes the deaths of most of the cast (including 6, grrr).

Here's something. I just put it under the Things you caught after multiple viewings thread...but it's also symbolism...so I'll put it here, too. I hope that's allowed.
So, at the very end of the movie, when the souls of 2, 1, 8, and 6 start floating into the sky, the fabric on their little banner thingies is completely on fire. Then the camera cuts to 5 looking adorable hesitant and all you see is a little fringe of flame right at the very bottom of his banner. And then as 9 nods and 5 rises into the sky as well, his banner begins to burn the rest of the way!
It took me a couple of viewings to absorb that, but now I think it's really cool.

I had a friend suggest that they rode on the smoke of the fires to reach the heavens. Maybe it's suppose to mean that even from destruction, life can rise again? That would explain them making it rain shortly after, too. ^^; Just a thought
