That is so cool - is your friend going to post that theory essay? Cuz I would love to read it! It pretty much sums up what I thought about their "breathing". I don't know if she plans to or not, but the whole essay is really cool. It relates to stitchpunk medicine and how they would do first aid, how their bodies works, etc. I'll puppy face her and see if I can't get her to post it on the forum somewhere. Does it also happen to explain where they get their energy from? Because that's really bugging me....

You mean the soul injections? I suppose, but that's more like just giving something a jump charge to start it up. Because I doubt the soul of an old man who was likely going to die soon anyways chopped up and spread evenly into 9 chunks would be able to last as long as it did, and even if it did, they shouldn't have very much energy left from it Energy can't come out of nowhere, and I've never seen them do anything that could presumably replenish them, so where do they get the energy to CONTINUE going?

Saying they're powered by the soul inside them isn't all that far-fetched. They obviously aren't hooking themselves up to batteries. They're essentially homunculi anyway. The theory of creating golems like this has been around for centuries, and that was when they thought it'd be fun to use hair, skin, and other *AHEM* stuff to to put life into a small clay avatar. Johan Conrad Dippel was a prime example of this, only his experiments used cadavers in a morbid attempt to place a soul inside of them (fun fact: he was born in Castle Frankenstein and is considered one of the inspirations for the mad Dr. Frankenstein of Mary Shelley's novel).
These guys are just more complicated models of the same ancient theory.

Yeah, I agree with Vance - interesting note.
Personally, I've always thought their energy came from some form of photosynthesis. To me, alchemy is a mimickary of life and science, and . . . I dunno. Photosynthesis. Maybe then the breathing could make more sense? Taking in carbon dioxide?
*shrug* Powered by their soul makes more sense, the more I think of the photosynthesis thing. XD

For some reason, the photosynthesis thing reminded me of a part of a Spongebob episode, which I will now somewhat 9-ify!
9: I know! Like plants! *lays on the ground and spreads arms out* Photosynthesis... photosynthesis... 7: *stares* You want to just join the others and go to the park?
Sorry, it was just the first thing that came into my head!

Yeah. The Soul-Powered idea does make more sense, but I think that they would need sunlight quite often. It would be their "Happy Vitamin". ^^ Like, if they didn't get enough sunlight, then they would get all depressed and stuff.
Anyway, it doesn't seem to me as if the breathing is really necessary for the Stitchpunks, but just a habit from having a human soul, because as humans, we need to breathe. ^.~ Just my thoughts on it.

The problem is I doubt there's a terrible lot of sunlight, and it's obvious some of them don't get out much. Even in the daytime it's extremely dangerous.
A golem/homunculus runs on nothing but its own power... like soul power. They don't need to eat or breathe. They just need to rest when they exert themselves. It's more of a sensible idea than having something that must have a power source to survive.

:futzes around with Occam's Razor:
Uh, couldn't it just be a means of expression? Yeah, 9 huffs on the run back to 1,7 and the twins, but he doesn't need to catch his breath when he gets there. ...Then again, 5 had to wipe his mouth chasing that record.
:cuts the crap out of self with Occam's Razor & passes out from blood loss:

5 was expelling heat from his body through hs mouth, therefore creating condensation around his lips, therefore causing him to wipe it away... *shot* XD
