Ok, in the movie, there are multiple scenes of the stitchpunks breathing hard after running.
But people say: why do they need to breathe? They are little machines with no lungs, so why breathe?
Well, I've got a simple theory to answer that question.
When the stitchpunks run, their internals get hot. The harder they run or exert themselves, the hotter they get.
Now, they don't seem to have any cooling fans or such for their internals. So I think they "breathe" to cool down their insides.
So it would make sense for them to "gasp" after running. They just need more air to cool themselves down, and the "breathing" acts like a cooling fan.
Anyone ever have this idea for it or ever thought about it?
Comments and theories are welcome on this subject. ^^

For me, I think something similar to your theory, that they breathe as something replacing a cooling fan. And usually when I use breath as an emotional reaction in writing, I try to replace their breathing with something more physical, like wringing hands, shifting in their sleep. It's more a challenge I've given myself, but the breathing thing isn't a theory that everyone would think of, so I should write things that are more fitting to machines with emotions.
I'm rambling now. Off to bed now.

They might have lungs. If you believe in the heart of the talisman.
Buuuuuut I like your theory more, 6&7fan.

^ From the artbook They do appear to have some sort of ribcage and machinery around the lung area... So I think you're probably pretty close with your idea. They have a lung-like system that cools down the machinery inside, and helps them speak. They obviously don't need oxygen, because then the gas would have killed them. XD

I agree with the cooling lung theory. They probably work like little bellows that just pump air into their bodies to cool down their innards. Here's a picture of one of my OC's innards where I illustrated the concept. They're probably self-contained and inflate like bellows rather than balloons since whenever we see any of the characters panting onscreen I don't think their chests move.

I agree wholeheartedly with the theory that the "breathing" acts as a cooling mechanism.
How else are they going to cool down quick enough? Just standing there in the middle of a fight isn't very safe and without "breathing" they would surely overheat and shut down. That and it makes them seem more human.

Breathing = cooling; I totally agree. Here's a neat exert from a theory essay a friend of mine is doing on stitchie medicine (she's doing it for our rp, but it's cool to share!).

I always thought it was just a plothole and rolled with it.. though cooling is probably the most logical reason. The bigger question is: Where and how do they replenish the energy they use fighting, inventing, getting everyone killed and doing day to day tasks? They have no digestive system to speak of, and I'm not sure if their mouths actually go anywhere....

They have no digestive system to speak of, and I'm not sure if their mouths actually go anywhere.... I always thought of the mouths having a piece of fabric much like ones soft-pallet and back of throat. If we see how they can say words that no one could say without a tongue then there is fabric. The Cooling system works as well and the whole thing on sleep. I feel that overheating explains most of the plot-holes. In the beginning 9 passed out because of over heating and the breathing could be over heating much how with anger or high emotions we get "red face". However there is one thing, in the part when 5 chases the record he stops and wipes his mouth. Almost like he's sweating, could this be something caused by over heating?

Possibly, Stigma... I know that alot of heat causes condensation, though that would soak into the burlap of 5's face and couldn't simply be flicked away.
Also, lest we forget, that these little guys have human soul fragments, and therfore exhibit human-like behavior all the time due to the human nature of their souls. Little habits like wiping away sweat and sobbing are all part of human emotions that are very difficult to simply not do or forget.
But perhaps I'm rambling... ^^;

While they don't breathe regularly, they have been seen to breathe during physical exertion. I personally like to think that it's both the "bellows-cooling" and the "soul-memory". Keep the internal mechanics cool while also giving them more human qualities for the audience to relate to.

That is so cool - is your friend going to post that theory essay? Cuz I would love to read it! It pretty much sums up what I thought about their "breathing".

I don't know if she plans to or not, but the whole essay is really cool. It relates to stitchpunk medicine and how they would do first aid, how their bodies works, etc. I'll puppy face her and see if I can't get her to post it on the forum somewhere.
