I don't think they have any computer-ish parts in there like microchips. All their 'programming' seems to come from the bit of soul instilled in their bodies. Replacing delicate parts would be a problem though.
Off topic: 9 is the only fandom where I can tolerate 'optics' being used to describe eyes.

Well of course they're 'optics' rather than eyes. Where else are we going to get a chance to use such a beautifully jargonous phrase? I'm a little iffy on the subject of microchips. The B.R.A.I.N.'s level of AI proves that this world must have some pretty advanced computer technology, despite the 'steampunk' aesthetic. Besides, we may all have by whatever taxonomy 'souls' or 'lives,' but we also have physical, corporeal brains to process data and house our memory. Exactly where the 'brain' ends and the 'soul' begins is the subject of much debate (too much to get into here) ; but I believe that there has to be some kind of programming and problem-solving ability built into the stitchpunks. And seeing that they lack flesh-and-blood gray matter and neurons, that would most reasonably come in the form of computer chips.
