Ok folks, I found something interesting today.
Some folks say that 9 was a flop because it didn't do very well in theatres. Well, that's just not true.
9 had a rather limited release in theatres in the States, as well as a somewhat limited release overseas. That alone limited its earnings.
But for the theatres in which is DID open, it averaged over $6,400 per screen, in the top 20 per screen in 09.
Speaking of numbers, here are the final budget to earnings numbers:
www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=9.htm
Production Budget:
$30 million
Domestic earnings:
$31,749,894
So it DID beat its budget at home...but then we factor in the earnings overseas:
Foreign earnings:
$16,678,169
Total Worldwide Theatrical earnings:
$48,428,063
9 grossed 1.6 times its budget, and since a box office success is defined as one that meets both its operating and marketing budget, 9 is thus a success.
True, it's not the massive, earth-shaking blowout that Avatar or Harry Potter was, but it wasn't trying to be. (although it DID open number two at the box office that week)
Let's also not forget the continued revenue generated from DVD, Blu-Ray, and download sales of the movie in this, but that's harder to track. Even so, with just theatrical data to go on, 9 IS a success.
An interesting fact:
Of the 344 films released in 2009, 9 ranked number 95.
95/344 = 27.6
So 9 was in the top 27% of releases in the world in 2009.
Meaning it was basically in the top quartile of releases.
Not too shabby, Focus Features. Not too shabby at all.

So take heart!
9 was and IS a continued success!
