I found that I really love all the characters in this film, which does not happen very often for me. Of course, 6 is at the top of the list for me, but everybody else falls in the favorite box too. So here goes, 1 through 9, the qualities I think they represent.
- Human insecurity and insufferable pride. I think this is the part everybody tries to hide and the person nobody wants to be.
- Faith. It's hard to pinpoint 2 because I think for all intents and purposes, he has the least amount of on-screen development, but he seemed to have a faith in things he couldn't understand, given that he seems to be the only one who put any stock in anything 6 said/drew. Faith is believing without seeing and I think 2 is an embodiment of that quality.
- A protective spirit. I think 3 is the bolder one because 4 seems to hide behind him/her frequently. I think anybody who has a good relationship with a brother or sister can relate to being protective.
- The introvert. I guess both twins represent that in a way as neither of them "talk", but being the 4 hides behind 3 so much, I would say he/she is the introvert of the two. I can totally relate because I have a brother and he is waaaaaaay more outgoing than I am in social situations.
- Lack of confidence; self-doubt. 5 underestimates himself and gives the impression that he lacks what it takes to be or do things he is perfectly capable of being and doing. I can relate because I used to wrestle with the same feeling all the time; not so much anymore though. ^_^
- Social awkwardness; eccentricity; depth. The obvious things are the first two. 6 is very eccentric and obviously has trouble connecting socially with others and I attribute this to the fact that he is so terribly deep. He sees a bigger picture than everyone else, but unfortunately, he lacks a way to relay it so they can understand. Sometimes when you're a deep person, almost no one believes you. I can soooooo relate. *has been called a conspiracy theorist on many occasions just for seeing and telling the truth*
- Fiercely independent. I know it was said of her in the bonus features on the disk, but I have to agree. There is just no other label to stick on that chick! And I can relate because if someone says I can't do something, my first response is usually "Watch me!"
- Need for acceptance. Yes, I see 8 as way more than just a big doof. I think he pals around with 1 because he wants to be accepted and it's pretty evident that the others are intimidated by his size and brawn. I can relate here because, like most people, I want to be accepted for who I am and it's hard to find accepting friends these days.
- The need for something more. 9 was always looking for answers; better ways of doing things. I think that is something that is born in every human being as well.
A bit off topic, but I thought I'd add it just for kicks. I'm a Christian, so when I really got into this movie, I started relating it to being a Christian. The way the stitchpunks each had a piece of the scientist's soul and were the only trace of humanity kind of reminds me of how each Christian is supposed to be a piece of God to the rest of the world. Just my perspective on the film and its characters.
