Sequels are veeery difficult to make, and usually pale in comparison with the original. If there is ever for 9... they'll be making a risky move for that.
Instead of a sequel, why not a spin-off or an adaptation? Maybe even a series! I'd totally squeel if there would be something like that anyday. :3

The symbols for the seasons look kind of cool. And it's an interesting idea, but maybe it shouldn't be an enemy of the scientist? Because in a time of war, grudges hardly seem like something someone would dwell over- maybe it could just be someone who desperatly wanted to live on in some way shape or form, and discovered how to make stitchpunks, and with his POWERS COMBINED he did it. And back to the symbol idea, I still think if there were punks that had the power to control the weather that'd be uber cool- like... the Seasonpunks! Bringing spring, summer, fall and winter to everyone! They'd be like gods. Just gods of weather. Thanks, I'm gald you found my idea interesting YAY. Thats a good idea of yours, that person could be a friend of the scientist or found his buleprints and notes of how to make the ragdolls his or her own. That was also my other idea but instead of having the power of weather I wanted them to have the power of alchemy like Full Metal Alchmist, thats how I got the idea(I been the show a couple of times, tee hee). ^^

Well, here's an idea... Maybe some of the rebels wanted to "donate" their souls to other ragdolls, but the scientist said no, for various reasons... so they went and did it behind his back? XD Just a thought.

Maybe if it was a compilation of past present and future events perhaps

Thanks! The scientist DID need to sleep, once and a while. XD So it's possible they could just go... read everything, and copy it down, and he would never know about it. lol Or maybe they watched him working, from around the corner... But honestly, I don't think Shane would add new characters... (10 or beyond), because he was very specific about 9 being "the most evolved", and all that.

Honestly, the idea of the rebels making their own stitchpunks behind the Scientist's back would seem to be the best move, since it would give a chance for a whole new slew of interesting characters to be put forward. It would be interesting to see characters that are applied with a very different style and meaning. Since the Scientist wouldn't know about it, he wouldn't know if they made more advanced stitchpunks than he did, or more primitive, and such.

It could be interesting, for 9 and the others to come across a seperate "stitchpunk society", of sorts XD I just... can't see Shane doing that. I think he would focus more on the leftover machines, or flashbacks of the characters who died. Of course, I could be completely wrong. lol But that's my educated guess. But hey, that's what fanfics are for.

Found something interesting in this www.firstshowing.net/2009/09/03/shane-acker-talks-sequel-to-9-plus-more-pg-13-animation/ The URL is pretty consistent with what it's about, but here's what I want to draw attention to: "When I asked Acker about if they'd ever consider expanding the universe into other mediums like comic books, he hinted about a sequel. "Who knows, there might be a sequel in the works," Acker said. "There's still more territory to be mined, more stories to be told in this world." When I asked for more details, he replied: "We just loosely kicked around ideas. I think everyone's poised to see if the films works, if it finds an audience and makes some money. I think everyone is chomping at the bit to see if it does, and if it does, then maybe there will be an opportunity to make a sequel. I think it would be a great world to revisit." Even if a sequel to 9 (would it be called 10?) takes a while to get off the ground, Acker is already pitching another project." Looks like we haven't seen the last of Acker yet

OMG! I just had a great sequel idea:
Okay, you guys remember the movie Cloverfield? Where you, the audience, is basically forced to view the world from only one small point of view instead of some omnicient camera view. Well, in the DVD commentary, they talked about making not a sequel but a parallel storyline for a new movie.
They said that in the movie, there were most likely more people with video cameras filming the events. and that film would most likely be confiscated by the military if New York was quarantined. In fact, the main characters of the movie run into someone else with a video camera on the Brooklyn Bridge before it collapses.
This opens up the possibilities of different points of view of the same story. This way, more questions about the monster and the battle for New York City could be answered.
Here is my point:
In the same way, 9 forces us to view the world mainly from 9's point of view: We're dropped into the situation with no good idea of the previous events What happened? Who are these characters? How did they get this way?
Now, many of the people on this forum have written about the events that might have occurred before 9 awoke. Many of these stories are told from the point of view of the other characters-they would have to be, as 9 is still "asleep"
Now if Acker were to make another movie from the point of view of the other 8 stitchpunks, telling the same story but from a different point of view-filling in the gaps with the other characters' thoughts, the story as a whole could be further explained.
Like why 7 and the twins left-that could be told from their point of view
Or what really led 1 to send 2 out into the Emptiness to die. An argument of some sort? Did 1 feel his position of power was threatened by sweet old 2? That could be further explained from 1 or 2's point of view
Or even why 8 is so subsberviant to 1
Or even how 1, 3, 4, and 7 came to be firing the artillery piece at the Fabrication Machine
All of these questions could be answered through another point of view besides 9's.
Sorry for the long response, folks.

thats a really good idea, but i think Acker has ideas down, eaither that, or hes just beng evil and teasing us! well i had an idea, along the lines that we cant ALL be dead. i wanted to write a fic that was a single person, roaming nomad-like, and found the Scientists things while she was looking around. being curious, she decidid to make a stitchpunk of her own. reading the Scientist's notes, seeing how he already had numbers, decided to do the "20" seires, 21 through 29... or just start over, copying the designs that were done already, not knowing that they had already been made... just tossing around ideas>.> *is key'ed*

Meh, a lot of people will say something is bad just because it's popular - just as a lot of people will say something must be good just because it's popular. I don't intend to try to watch Titanic again because I'm sure I'll just fall asleep again. The only part I caught after the first five minutes was when the girl blew the whistle. And even then, only because the sound of the whistle woke me up, haha. 9 Squared...that would be an AWESOME name. Hm...now I'm wondering what the PLOT of a sequel might be. I was looking through the winners of the Beasts of 9 contest on dA, and I remember Acker said that he could see one of them being tamed by 7 in a sequel...maybe the plot would be that 9, 7, 3, and 4 are looking for a new place to live, and find other stitchpunks that are being plagued by more machines, thus prompting them to help? *chants to self* Must not make that into a fanfic, must not make that into a fanfic, must not make that into a fanfic... Ahem! If that's the case, I just hope the writers don't try to go for the "marital problems" subplot that SO many sequels have. I'm a little sick of it by now. "Yeah, 7, despite the fact that we have pretty good chemistry and get along very well, I've decided that I like this random stitchpunk chick all of a sudden, thus prompting you to get jealous and go off on your own for a bit! You might even get captured and I'll have to come rescue you again! Doesn't that sound like fun?" It could work in context, but...I don't know. If that DOES end up happening, then I'd just want it to be well told. Love triangles seem to be one of those things that are hard to pull off properly. And the fact that I just don't like them might factor in there too XD I think it'd be cool if they were to meet a prototype named 0 or something |D; And he/she could be horribly disfiguired etc. I have no idea about a plot though |D; And, PLEASE no romance xD; I get sick of movies constantly ALWAYS having romance in them one way or another. ... I also need something to keep my "7 and 9 are only close friends" dream alive |D; -Hates pairings- Actually, what I REALLY want them to do is have 9 do something completely epic, so that people will stop calling him stupid etc. It kinda makes me mad that people keep saying that he is... I mean, what if reactivating the fabrication machine was a good thing in the long run? (I already explained this in the "Things you caught after re-watching the movie" and I dun feel like explaining again |D; )

Haha! One of the things I enjoyed so much about 9 was how subtle any romantic subtexts were. Heck, it can be argued that 9 and 7 were in fact just close friends, since it's never stated outright in the English version that there is any attraction there. Of course, their actions (particularly 9's) might say otherwise, but yeah. I despise overly romantic scenes; I always feel like I'm intruding on someone's private moment with their sweetheart xD I actually have a character named 0 who's a prototype xD He's not so much disfigured as he is flawed, but yeah. That'd be an interesting part of a sequel or prequel, seeing the process and just HOW the Scientist came up with the idea for the dolls. Well...it'd be interesting to ME, anyway, haha...I'd like a little more info than what was in the diaries, in any case, because I'm curious like that

Im only esponding to the part abt 9 not being so stupid and doing something epic:
READ MAI FIC. (altho I warn you of some 7/9. But it's not the main focuse, like their kissing all the time or anything. 7 is still badass and it's an adventure story. And 9 gets some regret for what he did but finds out he can change it. AND IT'S EPIC.)
plz check it out. I need opinions. XP
AS TO THE SEQUEL:
I FOUND TWO INTERVIEWS WITH HIM MENTIONING STUFF ABT IT.
ONE:
Q: What are some of the ideas that you couldn’t get into the film?
SHANE ACKER: That’s an interesting question. It’s all a process. You’re constantly trying things and throwing it out so we were always… There’s a lot that we threw out – not a lot of footage. We went through this really extensive storyboarding. We kept storyboarding the whole film so we’d throw things out.
Q: But in the writing stage?
SHANE ACKER: It’s all to try to pull more emotion out of the audience. I felt like one of the twins should die and the other twin would…
Q: Ohhhh!
SHANE ACKER: See? Yeah, terrible. Right? And then the other twin is there and seeing that their other counterpart is gone and that was the only one they could really communicate with. That’s really heavy, dramatic stuff. But then you always try to pay that off with something else somehow in the end, but that was my instinct, for good or for bad. We had to pull back on that one a little bit. That’s just one example.
Q: After 7 years, do you have any thoughts on a sequel?
SHANE ACKER: Yes, we actually had a couple of meetings and I think we’ve come up with some pretty fun ideas. It was fun -- Timur (Bekmambetov), Jim and I just spitballing stuff. It’s interesting because we sort of set up at the end of the movie maybe life will be returning to the planet. The next chapter might be how do they deal with that. If they’re sort of the eternal shepherds of this new world and life is coming back, what happens if that life starts to push in and encroach on them or threaten them? Do they step in and try to alter that and change the course of that? Or do they try to let that play out naturally and step back? Those could be interesting questions. And also, how will they be able to evolve themselves and replicate themselves? Do they still hold true to that human spirit inside them? Or do they recognize that they’re machines and try to evolve themselves as machines? And does that then become the slippery slope that slips them back into the trajectory that the machines were on? I mean, these are just interesting questions that we can begin to start to ask.
Q: Do you think you would want to stay in this world another 3 or 4 years?
SHANE ACKER: I’ve been working on other projects, which is fun. It’s fun to take my head out of it. It could be a really rewarding experience to get back into it.
Q: If you go back 10 years when it started, what was the first thought? How did it spark?
SHANE ACKER: It was actually 1999 when I started. It was like a “Wow, I’ve got to come up with something for this thesis film” (laughs) kind of an idea. And I really love the world of stop motion so I wanted to do a stop motion film. I love the texture and the quality and the way you can create. I wanted to express the armatures and the things that are within the characters like the Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmajer and some of these other independent filmmakers. So, it kind of started there and then I imagined this post-human world, this world in which we’re gone and now there’s this new life form emerging out of what we left behind, but they still have this creative spirit, this intelligence, but there’s a legacy from the past that’s trying to smother that and take that from them and that was that beast so these are some of the ideas. Then also, how do you do just pure visual storytelling with no dialogue. I looked at a lot of graphic novelists like Mobius. He did this Arzac series which was just this character in this world and each one was like 3 or 4 pages of a visual story, but they were really rich and you really got a sense of who this character was and what this world was like from just those panels. Those were the kind of ideas that were the impetus for the short.
Q: If you go forward with the sequel, will you take the opportunity to explore some of the darker themes that you didn’t pursue in this film? Is that when the twin will get it?
SHANE ACKER: (Laughs) I don’t know. I think I’d like to deal with these larger moralistic questions, which are things that I’d like to focus on and think about. Again, the idea of man and machine and the separation of the two and then also this idea of the natural environment and how do we affect it and ill affect it and do we try to control it or do we let it play out. I mean, some of these issues, they’re not necessarily dark, but they could lead to dark territory.
SECOND: ComingSoon.net, Timur Bekmambetov, and Shane Acker get asked questions, but only Acker is answering at this point...
CS: Now that you've finished the movie, do you have any idea what you might do next? Are you going to try and develop something else or continue to work with Tim or Timur to do something else?
Acker: Yeah, we're actually trying to seek projects and talking about the sequel to "9," we've been talking about that.
CS: Would that be called "10" or "9 1⁄2"?
Acker: (laughs) I don't know. It's been a big year of 9 movies, it's kind of crazy. There's "District 9."
CS: You should try to meet Neill if you get a chance. Besides having movies with "9" in the title, you two have a lot of common. He also started by doing a short on his own, very low budget and he has Peter Jackson as his producer/mentor. I suggested to Focus and Sony they should have the two of you meet and do something.
Acker: That would be fun. I'd love to meet him. I'm actively looking at other projects and I'm developing a feature based on this comic book series. Nothing has really been announced right now but I've actually been looking for other projects.
CS: But you'll stay in animation?
Acker: Animation is my true love and I think we're just opening the door for the possibility of what animated films can be. We're on the cusp of it so I'm really excited to explore the medium, but also looking at live action projects, too, things with a pushed reality, fantasy element and world-making, because that's really of interest to me. But again, how do you make a completely unrealistic fantasy world but grounded so that it feels very real and tactile and the characters and emotions feel real. That's something I'm really interested in continuing to explore.
~~~~~~~~~~
Notes:
Shaney is staying in animation: I like it. *smiles*.
AND DAMMIT I CANT FIND IT! Oh well... It was anothewr interview where Shane said something about REPRODUCTION OF THE STITCHPUNKS. Yes, you heard me. REPRODUCTION. *smile grows*
XD ill find that interview one day...
EDITS:
I found another interview! but it's just stating something about "his world" and i just wanted to post this up cuz it's kinda cool....
TJ: It’s kind of dopey to ask this about a short that is so rich in detail, but are there any secrets that it holds that no one’s asked you about yet?
SA: Well, I’ve littered it with Easter eggs and shoutouts to a lot of artists who have really inspired me and my studies. In almost every shot there’s a little something that’s referencing some artist, whether it’s Klimt or Matta or the Brothers Quay or Pixar. There’s a Zoetrope, which is the first animation machine. In filling up this world, I was filling it with all these things that have really been inspiring and influential to me. When he’s sliding, he’s sliding on a couple pages of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, and the book that he ends up destroying the beast with is actually Beowulf. No one’s really going to notice. Maybe someone will pick up on it. But there’s all these kind of things in there, because they’re running around in my world, in some sense. And I’m sure there’s traces of so many other artists’ work in that film. It’s built on the backs of others.
HE MENTIONED BEOWOLF. I REMEMBER SOMEONE MENTIONING SEEING THAT IN "MISHAPS" (OR SOMETHING) THREAD! SWEET COINCEDENCE... I DONT BELIVE IN COINCEDENCE THO.
Creator this post is long. SRY *hides*
