Hey, so did anyone ever discuss just what the heck their lift/elevator thingy in the globe is made from? I can't figure it out, and believe me, I tried. Because I have problems.

Yeah, that's always been a bit confusing to me too... I mean, there doesn't seem to be any way for them to have built it with only themselves and 7 to do it, and it seems pointless for humans to have bought it, since it's way too small to have any practical use.

It's hard to guess, but it looks like the twins/7 made it out of the arm of an old fashioned chandelier... Kind of like this one. But less fancy, and the candle removed. That's just my guess, though! It might be the neck of a desklamp, too.

I always thought the levers were made from utensils of sorts.... I know there's a whole whack of wires attached to it though. XD

The levers definitely seem to be made of forks, but I'm not sure about the rest of it.
Although having just looked that scene up to check, I find it mildly amusing that they immediately worked out what 9 meant by 'something terrible'.

*goes to check* Yeah, the levers are definitely made from utensils. I like that chandelier idea, Anna! The shape seems to fit, and there was bound to be one in the library somewhere (the place being so old-fashioned, and all). It seems to be some kind of balancing mechanism (there are books weighing it down on the other end). Maybe parts of it come from some kind of old-timey office/copying machine? Like a pantograph? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PantographIt kills me that they didn't explain it in the commentary you don't even know

They have some sort of pulley system going on, because they summon the elevator and turn the book's pages with strings. It also wraps around the inside of the globe, instead of going straight up and down. It reminds me of "Spaceship Earth" from Disneyworld, now that I think about it... XD

Kind of reminds me of an orrery to some degree...

XD That's what I thought at first, too, but the strings don't attach to the lift at all. The strings lead from the pages of the book to the little tags marking each section, so they know where everything is. I like that orrery idea, Az. *ponders some more*

I always thought it was a planetarium, you know, the rooms that have the moving sun and moon?

Yeah, that type of mechanism seems to make sense, with the rotations and all. I guess we'll never know for sure, but it's fun to think about. For me at least. Because I'm a nerd. :D

and it fits in with the library setting, as that would be were a planetarium was. I'm 95% sure that it's a planetarium

Wait, do you mean that the actual globe itself is a planetarium? I think they said in the commentary that it was part of the statue of the three maidens by the fountain.
But who's to say there wasn't one there in the library, and that's where the got the mechanisms?

The only reason I feel like it's a planetarium is that the platform reminds me of the platform that is used for the sun and moon, and that in a planetarium it does move up and across just like the platform in the movie.

Oh, wait a second, I thought you were talking about a planetarium theater. (That's the only way I've ever used the word, but it turns out that it refers to a few different things! Who knew?)
But you mean one of those mechanical devices, right? Like an orrery? Then yes, I think that's a definite possibility!
I'm loving all these ideas...
